Ekadashi Vrat: The Complete Guide

Dates · Fasting Rules · Puja Vidhi · Significance · 2026

Twice every month, millions of lamps flicker to life in Hindu homes across India. Tulsi beads turn slowly in devoted hands. The mind grows quiet, and the heart turns toward Narayana. This is the day of Ekadashi.

In Sanatan Dharma, Ekadashi is called Hari-vasara — the Day of Lord Hari, the sacred day of Lord Vishnu. It falls on the 11th lunar day of both the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) and the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) — giving us 24 Ekadashis in a standard year. In 2026, because of Adhika Maas, the year holds a rare 26 Ekadashis — an extraordinary window of spiritual merit.

Why Is Ekadashi So Significant?

The Padma Purana and Skanda Purana both declare that Ekadashi tithi is the personified protective energy of Lord Vishnu Himself. A demon named Mura once defeated all the gods and seized the heavens. Vishnu manifested a divine energy that took the form of Ekadashi and slew the demon. From that day forward, Ekadashi became the day of Lord Vishnu's grace and divine protection.

Observing Ekadashi is not merely abstaining from food — it is the offering of one's very soul at the feet of Narayana.

Fasting Rules — The Correct Way to Observe

Dashami (The Day Before): Eat a simple sattvic meal at night — avoid fried foods and rice. No meat, onion, or garlic. Sleep early and keep the mind calm.

On Ekadashi: Wake during Brahma Muhurta. Take a Sankalpa (vow). No grains of any kind — rice, wheat, lentils, flour are all avoided. Permitted foods: fruits, sabudana, water chestnut flour, milk, curd, dry fruits, rock salt (sendha namak). Chant Vishnu mantras and perform evening puja.

Dwadashi — Parana (Breaking the Fast): The fast must be broken after sunrise on Dwadashi. Offer bhog to Lord Vishnu first, then accept prasad.

⚠️ Important: The Parana window on Dwadashi is fixed — typically within 2–3 hours of sunrise. Breaking the fast after this window reduces the spiritual merit of the vrat.

Puja Vidhi — Step by Step

  1. Clean the puja space and purify with Ganga jal
  2. Light a ghee lamp in front of Lord Vishnu's murti or photograph
  3. Offer Tulsi leaves, flowers, and akshat — Tulsi is especially dear to Vishnu
  4. Perform Panchamrit abhishek or offer Ganga jal
  5. Chant: "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" — 108 times
  6. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama or read from the Bhagavad Gita
  7. Perform Aarti in the evening
  8. Listen to or read the Ekadashi Vrat Katha for that month

The Most Important Ekadashis of the Year

🔱
Nirjala Ekadashi — June

No food and no water. Scriptures say the merit of this one Ekadashi equals all 24 combined.

🔱
Devutthana Ekadashi — November

Lord Vishnu awakens from His four-month cosmic sleep. All auspicious ceremonies resume.

🔱
Mokshada Ekadashi — December

The day Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. The gates of Vaikuntha open.

🔱
Kamada Ekadashi — April

The wish-fulfilling Ekadashi, falling near Ram Navami in the sacred month of Chaitra.

Benefits of Observing Ekadashi

  • Destruction of sins — knowingly or unknowingly accumulated sins are cleansed by sincere fasting
  • Path to Moksha — regular Ekadashi observance leads toward liberation and Vaikuntha
  • Purification of the mind — fasting draws the mind away from bodily desire toward higher consciousness
  • Physical benefits — Ayurveda supports fasting twice a month for digestive health
  • Vishnu's grace — a fast observed with true devotion invites the compassionate gaze of Narayana

What to Keep in Your Home Mandir

  • Lord Vishnu's murti — a brass idol is considered the most auspicious
  • Tulsi plant or Tulsi leaves — Vishnu puja is incomplete without Tulsi
  • Brass diya — a ghee lamp amplifies the sacred energy of the puja space
  • Puja ghanti (bell) — the sound during aarti awakens divine presence
  • Panchamrit — milk, curd, honey, ghee, mishri for abhishek
  • Fresh flowers and akshat — keep the puja thali ready
"This day belongs only to Hari."

Ekadashi is not just a fast. It is a promise to yourself and to Narayana — made twice every month, renewed with every lamp lit.
